I don't know what to say about this book。 The advice in it is helpful for those who have little to no awareness about their privilege。 If a person has gotten far in their career by being lacking social awareness, social intelligence, or empathy, then this book may be helpful。 There was one short part in chapter 14 that seemed like it could be helpful for me。 I'll give it an extra star for that。 I found Brene Brown's "Dare To Lead" book far more insightful and inspiring。 I don't know what to say about this book。 The advice in it is helpful for those who have little to no awareness about their privilege。 If a person has gotten far in their career by being lacking social awareness, social intelligence, or empathy, then this book may be helpful。 There was one short part in chapter 14 that seemed like it could be helpful for me。 I'll give it an extra star for that。 I found Brene Brown's "Dare To Lead" book far more insightful and inspiring。 。。。more

This is a very good and useful book。 Different from many others business self development books, this one is focused on professionals in a more senior levels of their careers, it focus on small changes and opportunities that may have huge impact on your next steps。 It was very useful for me to note areas of opportunities and flaws that I was blinded to。

Very easy book with great every day examples。

Goldbho

Great leadership book with real life examples。 In addition, the author used his own real life experiences to convey his points。 It made it more genuine and practical。 Inspired me to adopt some of the suggestions。

I am not sure what to think。 I’m amazed that there are people out there that need assistance with providing basic human decency but apparently they do exist。 Anyhow, the tone of the book is somewhat off-putting and I believe it is because the author at times seems to speak of things that he doesn’t fully understand。 I was turned off by his position on the past and how those who who strive to understand their family history or recognize damaging behavior as a result of their childhood were essent I am not sure what to think。 I’m amazed that there are people out there that need assistance with providing basic human decency but apparently they do exist。 Anyhow, the tone of the book is somewhat off-putting and I believe it is because the author at times seems to speak of things that he doesn’t fully understand。 I was turned off by his position on the past and how those who who strive to understand their family history or recognize damaging behavior as a result of their childhood were essentially wasting time and that doing so doesn’t matter。 His reasoning is that you can’t “change the past” so there’s no point in dwelling in it。 This is absolutely not true and is irresponsible for him to suggest otherwise。 。。。more

The core of this book is actually a fairly simple message: be humble as a leader, or else you wont retain the respect of your colleagues and subordinates, and wherever you are in the corporate hierarchy, it will become a dead end if you dont learn how to accept constructive criticism and change for the better。 That simple concept manifests itself in a variety of ways that the book addresses that we may not be self aware enough to notice。 Such things we may delude ourselves in believing they are The core of this book is actually a fairly simple message: be humble as a leader, or else you wont retain the respect of your colleagues and subordinates, and wherever you are in the corporate hierarchy, it will become a dead end if you dont learn how to accept constructive criticism and change for the better。 That simple concept manifests itself in a variety of ways that the book addresses that we may not be self aware enough to notice。 Such things we may delude ourselves in believing they are what got us to success in the first place。 Things like being obnoxiously hyper-attentive to detail, believing that we should treat our people the way we want to be treated (which Goldsmith dubbed the "Golden Rule Fallacy") even though we arent managing our clones (so why would we treat them the way *we* want to be treated?), always having to add our "2-cents" because we think we are improving on an idea when really it does the opposite and especially dejects the one who came to you with the idea in the first place, trying to change someone who doesnt think they have a problem, not recognizing the modern fact that your employees are looking for what the company offers them in terms of fulfillment and happiness -- not what they can offer the company, and much more。The greatest thing about this book is that it doesnt repeat itself。 It's full of wisdom from start to finish。 In self improvement books I find its typical for the beginning to start strong, but once the core idea has been expressed it starts to repeat the same stories over and over to take up pages。 This book doesnt do that, and it speaks to the experience of Goldsmith's many years as an executive coach。Although I personally am not any sort of manager or CEO type currently, this book has more to offer than just for the already-successful, and will prove to be valuable as a re-read come a future where one may be in such a position。 。。。more

Picked this up for office book discussion and it reminds me all over again why I don't like business self-help books。 Most of the contents are common sense 101 you learnt at school, full of anecdotes and is so American-centric。 Did I learnt anything? Yes。 Was it something mind-blowing? No。 Picked this up for office book discussion and it reminds me all over again why I don't like business self-help books。 Most of the contents are common sense 101 you learnt at school, full of anecdotes and is so American-centric。 Did I learnt anything? Great authorAlways enjoy Marshall goldsmith books。 He does a great job marrying what to do with how to do it。 So many things to work on and it is all boiled down here。 Very applicable to any leader or someone wanting to move up。

Terdsak Jaidee

You could read it if you want to be a senior level manager。

Book full of wisdom and good nuggets to consider。

Worth reading!

I loved this book。 Some advice seems obvious when you read it, but nothing makes you feel stupid。 It's easy to sympathise with the examples given and I'm applying some of the learnings from this book every day。 I loved this book。 Some advice seems obvious when you read it, but nothing makes you feel stupid。 It's easy to sympathise with the examples given and I'm applying some of the learnings from this book every day。 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyed this。 Very actionable and easy to read。 I feel like I’ll be reading it multiple times in the years to come!

Jens

I like it best for its approach on coaching and working on interpersonal relationship skills。 Nothing mindblowing, but some good exercises, nicely simplified to the essence of the matter。

This is a very generic self help book。 I was expecting much more considering it was recommended by Mark Goulston who wrote “Just Listen。” Marshall Goldsmith comes off as a judgmental self-aggrandizing troglodyte and wrote an entire book about his anecdotal experiences, none of which have any bearing in scientific reality。 Would not recommend, gave it a 2 because I finished it and also because I found a thought provoking nugget or two。

Sofia Barrios

It is an excellent standard book。 Good to remind yourself of those things you need to assess about yourself。

Being an exec it’s hard at times to put away the skill set that got you the job。 Realizing I was doing my team no favors this book had me asking tough questions and changing my behavior。

Chris

This is a really good book。 It took me a while to find the time to finish it, as I enjoyed it, but was reading other things as well。 There is so much good advice it is somewhat hard to know how to implement it。 The Author pointed out that can be a problem and that you have to focus on one thing and not try to do it all。

Melodie

Pretty good。 Something to reference as you transition to a more managerial position。

Original self-development and leadership book on power relationships in the work space and in home。Good leadership and empowered teamwork is really, really hard。 You can be smarter, stronger, more experienced, but respect and authority is not guaranteed。 Many people turn to bullying to express authority and control。 This creates toxic culture and drives away talented people。 This book identifies more and less conscious dysfunctional patterns, that driven people have。 Also good plans of action on Original self-development and leadership book on power relationships in the work space and in home。Good leadership and empowered teamwork is really, really hard。 You can be smarter, stronger, more experienced, but respect and authority is not guaranteed。 Many people turn to bullying to express authority and control。 This creates toxic culture and drives away talented people。 This book identifies more and less conscious dysfunctional patterns, that driven people have。 Also good plans of action on how to get better。 Perfect balance between theory and practice。 。。。more

Good professional development book。 Good advice and strategies I intend to use。 Still a professional development book through and through though。 Kind of dry because it's the nature of the beast。 Good professional development book。 Good advice and strategies I intend to use。 Still a professional development book through and through though。 Kind of dry because it's the nature of the beast。 。。。more

This is basically a book about fundamental attribution bias in the workplace。 The author is an executive coach claiming that we all have traits that we think we are succeeding because of, but actually are succeeding in spite of。 He then drills down into what these traits commonly are and how to go about changing our behaviour for the better。

Mokah25

Great read (audiobook)。 It’s a bit dry, but if you can push past that there’s some really good nuggets of information。 The key is to not just read but to implement。 I would recommend this for anyone that is a people leader or manager。

An important book for every high energy individual that wants to look beyond the term 'feedback' and instead, 'feedforward'。 With its refreshing terms and key concepts that make it a relatable and easy read, it forces one to look within oneself to determine which flaw is holding us back from being even more successful。 How successful people can be even more successful。 Great one! What are the most common personal issues that hinder people for growing their career forward? How to overcome them? Author Goldsmith delivers here a methodology to identify your shortcomings and fix them, step by step。Not much psychology or advanced techniques explained in this book: it remains mostly high level with a lot of things you could have found out by yourself or may have read elsewhere。

Kristine

We spend so much time trying to do the “right” things, but there is significantly more value to stop things that are pulling us down。 The author lists 21 areas to watch for, and delves into the reason each should be avoided in your personal life and in the workplace。 Highly recommend to all, and especially to those who are just starting their careers。

Aimee

Great insights about poor behaviors of bosses (also applicable to coworkers) that prevent efficiency in the workplace。
